We left Beijing yesterday. We had to leave much of our stuff behind as we were only allowed 1 piece of luggage each on the in-China flight. The flight was really, really rough.... But we made it, and checked in to a beautiful Hotel, the Nanning Hotel.
Nanning is known as "The Green City", which is a very well-suited name because it is, indeed, very, very green.
There are lots of rice paddies when you first come into the City but it soon changes to a city with lots of buildings, old and new.
The Walmart is right next to the Hotel, as are the McDonald's, the KFC and the Pizza Hut.
When we got to our room, the crib was already in it. They even put cartoon cutouts on the wall!!! The room is beautiful, as you'll see in the photo link at the bottom of this post.
The most sobering moment, though, was when we looked out from this beautifully appointed, luxurious room, to see decrepit buildings 20 feet away, just out our window. While we complain about having to brush our teeth with bottled water, and about the dirty carpets, there are people who live in places that would have been condemned over 25 years ago if they were in Canada. And they don't complain.... So neither do we. We truly appreciate what we are fortunate enough to have...
Last night we went out for a communal meal, where everyone sits around a table with a big Lazy Susan type tray that you turn to access the food you want. It was absolutely delicious. We crashed pretty quickly after that. I went to sleep at about 10. Not sure when Craig did, but it was not long after me.
This morning, we were up at 5, and couldn't sleep. So we got up. We had been told that we would be meeting our daughters at 1:00pm today, so we started counting down the hours...
We went out to breakfast, and it was delicious. Then we went out to Walmart, and bought water, batteries, and Craig bought a watch because his died.
It is amazing how much attention I am attracting. People will come right up to me and stare at me from head to toe. They feel my white skin means I must be rich, or part of the elite class, and my blond hair? well, they're not sure what to make of that. The fact that I am a big girl is also something they've never seen and that they associate to health and wealth.
When we came back, we were told that the time we'd be meeting our daughters had been changed to 3:00pm. Grrrr..... more waiting....
OK!!! next blog will be the Gotcha Moments!!!! Our Julia arriving into our lives! How exciting!!!!
